Survey on Cultural Heritage Adaptive Reuse practice
Project Id | 3314 |
Project Name | Castle Ryn, Poland |
Description | Building is a renovated XIV century castle, which was rebuilt during the XIX century. There was a prison for women there for a period of time. After II World War it served as a town hall, but it was very expensive in use and there was no money for much needed renovation, so the town sold it to a private owner in 2001. The owner renovated the building and turned it into a hotel and a conference centre, that is operating since 2006. The renovation was organized in a very short time, less than a year, which is spectacular for such an enormous project. |
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project | Good public and private cooperation, involvement of the initiative with many local events, trying to work together (although it took some time to build the trust between the city and the owner of the building). A lot of new jobs in an area that didn’t have that many (despite being a tourist localisation). Pretty successful business model that is constantly evolving. Investing in new environmental friendly technologies as a way of saving money for the business. Some traditional skills and crafts have been used and promoted (local food, historic clothes created by seamstresses on the site), the city of cittaslow movement and the castle is a very active participant in that programme, which also allowed for the city to rebuild and renovate the harbour and some buildings in the area. |
