Survey on Cultural Heritage Adaptive Reuse practice

Project description
Project Id 3371
Project Name Antico Mercato, Siracusa, Italy
Description The area of the Old Market, in which there were parts of the Spanish defensive walls, was purchased by the City of Syracuse in 1885. Following the purchase, the Municipality decided to build a market for the city. Its construction began on 20 July 1899 and was completed in 1900. The building is located near the Temple of Apollo in Ortigia.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project The new activities are consistent with the current development dynamics of the Ortigia island, which is turning from a residential district into an area for both cultural tourism and leisure. The alterations carried out to adapt the building to the new use did not compromise its cultural identity. The new parts of the building are clearly recognisable. The new function is able to attract both citizens and tourists, increasing the vitality of the market area, mainly used in the morning. The reuse project carried out few alterations and mainly used local materials.
