Survey on Cultural Heritage Adaptive Reuse practice

Project description
Project Id 3406
Project Name Mercato Sonato, Italy
Description The Senzaspine Orchestra is an association of more than 200 musicians under 35 years old, united in the aim of bringing the general public closer to classical music and “high culture” in general. The association, established in 2013, has found its home in the Mercato Sonato (former local market of the S. Donato district) that, thanks to the commitment of its members, is changing its face, transforming into a place of wide-ranging art and culture. Many activities of the Orchestra, such as rehearsals and concert previews, are held in a central space equipped with backstage areas and platforms. Moreover in the venue are held symphonic concerts, dance classes and live music events of all genres, from pop, classical, folk to rock and electronic, as well as conferences and meetings.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project San Donato Market was once the local market of one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the city, home to many working-class people, hosting today many immigrants. Over the years, the market has experienced a progressive depopulation and despite being a symbol of Bologna, some citizens of the neighborhood had started complaining about the progressive increase in the crime episodes as drug dealing and neglect around the market area. However, this uncertain situation has been converted into an opportunity, thanks to the activities of the association Senzaspine. The venue has been redeveloped, generating positive outcomes for the entire area. Now the place has become a reference point for the neighborhood, also thanks to the fact that Senzaspine Orchestra implemented a strategy focused on the involvement and the engagement of residents.
