Project Name Fort Bakkerskil, Netherlands
Description Fort Bakkersil used to be part of the New Dutch Waterline, housing approximately one hundred soldiers and was in service until 1951. Since 2012 it is converted into a luxury Bed&Breakfast providing sustainable maintenance and contemporary use.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project The careful renovation preserves the historical view and enhances it with a new atmosphere. The old dungy and cold rooms have been transformed into bright and welcoming spaces. The B&B rooms are central heated and have a bathroom. Additional Two luxury apartments have a separate living room and kitchen area and a panoramic view of the Biesbosch National Park. Balancing the re-use of the historical military facilities while trying to preserve the authentic atmosphere and building integrity but also adjusting it for a new use, incorporating modern installations and sustainable heating systems. The new interventions are distinct from the old.
