Project description
Project Id 3630
Project Name Fort Resort Beemster, Netherlands
Description The Fort bij Nekkerweg, (Fort Resort Beemster) is part of the Amsterdam defence waterline, and it was constructed in 1913. In 2012 it was converted into a luxury wellness centre with hotel and restaurants. It represents a successful modern lifestyle adaptive re-use, incorporating military, cultural heritage. The new intervention is an underground extension, which does not interfere with the forts visual appearance in the landscape. The extension houses spa and wellness, which includes an indoor and outdoor pool, whirlpools, saunas and steam baths. The complex also has two restaurants, a conference room and a hotel. The sustainable energetic systems have been incorporated in the design, about 28 km of floor heating have been installed, fed with the heat recovered from wastewater of saunas and showers. (MD)
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project The Fort is part of the "Stelling von Amsterdam", one of the 42 fortresses around A'dam. We are sittuated in de Beemsten, also "crowned" with the UNESCO WH label. So 2 labels on 1 property! The fort is now used as wellness resort, marriage location, hotel, restaurant. (EC) Econ.I:We employ 120 people. By giving a commercial function to the fort, the monument ca be saved. Because we have a public function, we attract a lot of visitors&tourist. This is good for the surroundings. S-CI:As said the monument can be saved&visited 7 days a week. We can tell the story about the history of the fort&educate people. Social: We invite volunteers to come for a day of wellness each month. Env.I:We try to execute our business with as less as possible harm for nature/environment. We do a lot of energy saving, water savings, we solar power etc...(EC)
