Survey on Cultural Heritage Adaptive Reuse practice

Project description
Project Id 3711
Project Name FabLab Bologna, Italy
Description The MakeInBo association was founded in April 2013 by 18 founding members, to promote a new craft culture through the use of digital technology as a tool for creativity and process innovation, and to open a FabLab in the city of Bologna: a laboratory space that aggregates interests in design, electronics and digital manufacturing. The activities proposed were training for adults and children, at headquarters or at technical institutes, prototyping services for small-medium companies, use of digital machinery and 3D printing, consulting for new companies and operators in various sectors. The association evolved into FabLabBologna srls, a company that currently employs about 30 external collaborators and provides consulting services, project development, and prototyping for 4.0 companies, as well as 3D printing services, brokerage and resale of materials, and rental of digital machinery and tools.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project FabLab Bologna is one of several organizations using rent-free the space in the formerly abandoned shops and offices of Piazzi dei Colori. Piazza dei Colori is a long square inside the block of social housing called Villaggio Mattei, located in the suburbs of Bologna, close to the borders of the city. Since 2009 the Administration has realized the urgency to requalify the area. So it has decided to assign several abandoned shops for free to creative enterprises, associations and NPOs through several Public calls. Thanks to small maintenance work provided by the organizations that moved in the area, among them FabLab Bologna, and thanks to the activities and events organized by them in those spaces, the conditions of the area have been improved and that helped making Piazza dei Colori more lively and safer.
