Survey on Cultural Heritage Adaptive Reuse practice

Project description
Project Id 3723
Project Name Made in Cloister, Italy
Description The building that hosts the project "Made in Cloister" had a very intricate history. It is part of the wider religious complex of Santa Caterina a Formiello, which was built in the sixteenth century. In the nineteenth century, it was turned into a wool factory undergoing some transformations (example of industrial agriculture of the Bourbon period). From 1861, the year of the Unification of Italy, some conditions changed, and soon after, the factory was shut down. Little by little, the building was abandoned. In 2012 some local entrepreneurs promoted and funded the restoration and launched the project "Made in Cloister". Were restored the old sixteenth portico and the central wooden truss of the Bourbon age (example of industrial architecture of the eighteenth century). The latter was realized through a crowdfunding campaign in 2013.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project The restoration intervention has given back to the city an important historical building, creating a place suitable for holding exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events. Moreover, the project is contributing to create a new image of this area of the city, embracing the purpose shared by many associations and professionals to make it a creative hub. In line with this vision, the project "Made in Cloister" attempts to promote the made in Italy and local traditional crafts by projects involving international artists and designers. In particular, local artisans’ knowledge is offered to the production of international artists and designers, while artisans take from the latter new inspiration for their work. This cooperation is breathing new life into local crafts and aims to give new job opportunities to young generations and immigrants.
