The palace was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1755 and was temporarily used as a storage facility for iron in the 19th century.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project Improved place attachment and local identity, retaining of social and cultural values Attract more cultural visitors. Improved place attachment and local identity, retaining of social and cultural values. Enhancement of local culture, food, art, craft and music. Dates back to the 16th century, when the Coculim Palace was built there. Destroyed following the 1755 earthquake, from the nineteenth century began to be used for various purposes until it was earlier this year in a hotel five-star and also a museum. This is because, during the excavations for the construction of the hotel, several finds have been found, which depict different periods of Portuguese history, from the Roman occupation to the Islamic invasions. This is the case of a Roman city with a road and a well and even a stele, a funerary text in Phoenician. It is the oldest historical mark found there and one of the oldest in Europe, dating from the 7th century BC.
