Project Name Mercado Da Ribeira, Portugal
Description Mercado da Ribeira (also known as Mercado 24 de Julho) is Lisbon's main food market since 1892, when it opened with an iron interior and a large oriental dome. Recovery and rehabilitation of the river market, with a view to integrating four new economic axes of activity, namely gastronomy, arts, tourism and leisure.
Description of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the project Retaining of social and cultural values. Attract more cultural visitors. Improved place attachment and local identity, retaining of social and cultural values. Enhancement of local culture, food, art, craft and music. In 2010, after the market had been experiencing a decline in popularity and sales, Lisbon City Council searched for bids to revitalize the iconic cultural space. These efforts were part of a broader city plan to rehabilitate markets in Lisbon. Time Out Lisboa was granted permits to transform the Western half of the market into an extensive food court area that has become a culinary and cultural mecca. The first floor of the Ribeira Market is occupied by activities with "greater cultural leanings". The idea is that whoever visits the space has an "experience similar to browsing the magazine," said João Cepeda. Among the various activities that take place there are dances and musical shows. Currently it also has several restaurants of the most varied types.
